Effective, Engaging Reading Instruction
IntelliTools Reading: Balanced Literacy provides a balanced approach to early literacy instruction for first-grade level readers. The research-based, award-winning program integrates guided reading, supported writing, and word study or phonics activities. Nine units, built around animal themes, engage students in a year-long classroom program, extended day program, or summer school program that supports and supplements their classroom language arts curriculum.

Balanced Literacy aligns with NCLB’s Title I Reading First and Supplemental Educational Services (SES) grant requirements, as well as Title IV 21st Century Community Learning Centers requirements.

Winner of Technology & Learning’s Award of Excellence, Balanced Literacy supports the five essential components of reading instruction, and is specifically designed to help your lower-performing students, including:

  • Struggling readers
  • Reluctant writers
  • English language learners
  • Students with special needs

Designed by experts in literacy and special education, Balanced Literacy gives students the practice and multisensory reinforcement they need to become successful readers. The interactive multimedia program provides instruction in the Five Essential Components of Effective Reading Instruction:

  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Phonics
  • Fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension
Features
Theme-based Anchor Books
Printed Anchor Books are based on an engaging animal theme and provide a meaningful context for learning.
Balanced Approach
Students are exposed equally to the competencies that characterize fluent readers: guided reading, self-selected reading, explicit phonics, and writing.
Phonics Intensive
Decoding by analogy is a reliable and easy-to-understand strategy that students build on. The onset-and-rime method of phonics instruction is used.
Writing Activities
Primary Writing 3, in IntelliTools’ ReadyMade Curriculum Activities line, is included, providing guided writing activities corresponding to Balanced Literacy’s nine topic areas to reinforce literacy skills.
Repetition and Practice
Songs, rhymes, and patterned language facilitate retention and motivation, while meaningful repetition reinforces skills learned.
Immediate Assessment
Embedded assessment records the student’s performance and progress, helping teachers identify patterns of errors, mastery, and areas needing support.
Correlated to Standards
Lessons correlate to NETS Standards for Students (ISTE Standards), TESOL (ESL), and ELA Standards for selected states.
Funding Requirements
Balanced Literacy meets federal requirements, including No Child Left Behind and Reading First requirements.
Special Needs Support
Customizable options support different learning styles or special needs, while 23 colorful, durable overlays support IntelliKeys users
Teacher Support
Comprehensive Teacher’s Guide has day-by-day lesson plans; included with it are blackline masters, word cards, and program graphics.
Research Demonstrates Significant Improvement
Balanced Literacy was developed under a grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Institutes of Health, and extensively researched and tested with students nationally, with excellent results. Students in both the experimental and criterion groups were pre- and post-tested by a special research team, using professionally validated and previously validated tests. Post-tests results for both groups indicated an overall improvement in reading, and students in the experimental group showed substantial gains in reading, with some doubling and even quadrupling of pre-test scores. Students also demonstrated increased motivation and confidence in themselves as “readers.”
Customer Testimonials

"With simple, appealing graphics and intuitive navigation, the program lets kids move around easily, and the animal themes are sure to delight and interest them. Overall, Balanced Literacy is a well-thought-out approach to helping students master core reading skills."
Iris Oblille Lafferty, Ed. D., educational consultant and researcher for Technology and Learning Network

“We have implemented Balanced Literacy with our special needs students K-2 district-wide this year. One of our buildings liked the program so much they included Balanced Literacy in an Ohio Reads Grant. That building will be implementing the program for all first and second grade classrooms.”
Laurel Hamilton, Ohio Valley School District, Columbus, OH
