Focus on Literacy
English Word Order Translation
Concern about the literacy levels of many persons who are deaf and hard of
hearing was the inspiration for development of this breakthrough technology. The
iCommunicator program delivers American Sign Language (ASL) signs in English
word order (subject+verb+object) to improve the association between spoken,
written, and signed words, and promote literacy development. The video sign
language library contains more than 9,200 individual video clips. Careful
evaluation of potential end user (or application) needs and the system features
is encouraged to ensure that iCommunicator is a viable technology solution.
Candidacy Criteria Considerations have been developed to assist professional
evaluation and planning teams in making these decisions.
(Refer to Candidacy Criteria Considerations for more information.)
Training to Ensure Positive Outcomes
End Users, Speakers, and Implementation Managers
The iCommunicator uses continuous recognition of natural speech to translate
speech to text and/or sign language in real time. It is important that end
users, speakers, and implementation managers of this assistive technology
receive appropriate training in order to achieve positive outcomes when using
the technology. Successfully trained persons will easily be able to use and
maintain the iCommunicator program and peripherals. For most speakers it is
possible to establish a speech/voice recognition profile with very high accuracy
in less than one hour of training. The iCommunicator Training Manual provides a
systematic training process that includes practice exercises. If desired,
personalized professional training can be arranged through an Authorized
iCommunicator Reseller.
Section 508 Compatibility
Compatible with Microsoft Accessibility Options
The manufacturer is committed to helping the government, as well as private and
public sector businesses, provide improved accessibility of information and
technology through its products, information, services, and programs. As such,
the iCommunicator website and software application meet Section 508 requirements
for electronic and information technology accessibility.
