HeadMouse Extreme replaces a standard computer mouse for people who
cannot use their hands. It operates from the top of a computer
monitor, laptop computer, or augmentative communication device, and
measures the user's head movements. The wireless sensing technology
employs infrared light to track a small disposable target that is
placed on the user's forehead or glasses. HeadMouse Extreme provides a
wide field-of-view and superior precision, supporting even
graphics-intensive applications like drawing and computer aided
design.
When used with mouse button software, such as Origin Instruments'
Dragger, mouse clicks are performed by positioning the pointer and
dwelling for a selectable period of time. Alternately, selections can
be performed using an adaptive switch, such as the Origin Instruments
Sip/Puff Switch, or even through use of speech recognition software.
HeadMouse Extreme also comes with a built-in infrared receiver that
provides optional wireless connections for adaptive switches. A
Wireless Switch Transmitter is available for wireless transfer of
adaptive switch inputs from a wheelchair to the integrated receiver.
HeadMouse Extreme connects to the computer or augmentative
communication device through a USB port and operates using standard
mouse drivers. The HeadMouse is powered by the host device, over the
USB connection. The integrated electronic tilt sensor automatically
adapts to even the most unusual mounting requirements.
When used with an on-screen keyboard such as SofType or KeyStrokes,
HeadMouse provides head-controlled access to all of the full range of
functions for both keyboard and mouse, and to thousands of standard
personal computer applications including Internet access.
A variety of optional HeadMouse Extreme mounts are available for
notebook computers, flat panel displays and Alternative and
Augmentative Communication (AAC) devices. If a mount for your needs is
not currently shown, please inform us of your requirements.
Access for Augmentative Communication Devices
HeadMouse Extreme provides reliable head-controlled access to
augmentative communication devices that provide speech and
environmental control. HeadMouse Extreme integrates conveniently with
systems from a variety of suppliers, including Assistive Technology
Inc, DynaVox Systems, Enkidu Research, Prentke Romich and Words+.
For legacy devices that require a serial port interface, please see
our HeadMouse for Portables.

The Wireless Switch Transmitter allows a HeadMouse Extreme user to
actuate the left, right and middle mouse buttons using adaptive
switches without a direct connection to the HeadMouse. The Wireless
Switch Transmitter (WST) uses low power infrared light to communicate
with the HeadMouse Extreme, much like a television remote control. The
receiver is built-in to the HeadMouse Extreme and is located near one
of the HeadMouse logos behind the small window.
The WST has internal batteries that will provide months of operation.
An external power port is available for those needing longer run
times.
The switch inputs accept industry standard adaptive switches, which
use 1/8-inch (3.5mm) connectors. The WST is shipped configured for use
with mono connectors; however, it can be re-configured in the field to
accept stereo connectors. This is convenient for some dual switches
(Left and Right mouse buttons) that use one cable and connector.
The WST is generally used by those with adaptive switches that wish to
break the hard connection between the switch and the HeadMouse. Often
this is a power wheelchair owner that wants independence from an
attendant for connecting and disconnecting his switch.
