DrinkAide

Designed by people with physical disabilities!  If you use a wheelchair and have little or no upper body movement, with Drink-Aide™ you will be able to drink water independently!

Drink-Aide™ consists of a FDA approved insulated water bottle (HDPE #2), a vibration resistant flexible drinking tube and a universal clamp. The universal clamp fastens the insulated water bottle to a wheelchair, bed or any other convenient location. This hands-free innovation is a wellness product that allows a person with a disability to drink independently - in the middle of the night, outdoors or even on the go.

DrinkAide

Drink-Aide™ was designed, tested and produced by people with physical disabilities at Inglis House in Philadelphia, PA. Perhaps the greatest benefit of Drink-Aide™ is the newfound freedom. It provides freedom from caregivers, freedom for a person with a disability to travel beyond a room or a building, and the freedom to socialize outside, especially during the summer. Read about the development of the Drink-Aide™ in the article,"Ginger Ale, Velcro and a Dream: A COTA Becomes an Inventor."

Benefits of A Drinkaide Bottle

Water makes up 70% of our bodies, yet if you rely on a wheelchair and have little or no upper body movement, it's often difficult to get this vital fluid when you need it. You may often have to depend on caregivers whose attention may be diverted by other concerns. Drink-Aide™ gives wheelchair users the ability to drink fluids independently; it is a wellness product that contributes to a better quality of life in the following ways:

And, last but not least, with Drink-Aide™ you can get out, move about, and socialize outdoors, whenever you want, even during the warm weather!

Drink-Aide™ is a cost-effective solution to many caregiver concerns too. It provides a number of practical benefits including:

Drinkaide Bottle is Designed and Built byPeople Who use it

Drink-Aide™ was designed by the residents and staff of Inglis House. Inglis House is a long-term care facility that's home for nearly 300 adults with physical disabilities in Philadelphia, PA. Inglis House residents helped develop Drink-Aide™ and benefit from using it, and they have become entrepreneurs through the production of this revolutionary water bottle. Drink-Aide™ is assembled, packaged, tested and distributed by Inglis House residents who work in the vocational rehabilitation program.

"This is a consumer driven product," according to Program Director Barry Bussell. "We distributed various versions of the Drink-Aide™ within Inglis House. The residents used the product and told us what they liked and didn't like about it. We continuously improve the product based on their observations.

Meet Bill Hughes

Bill Hughes has been an Inglis House resident since 1974 and has been involved in the design and manufacture of Drink-Aide™ since its inception. Bill works in the Vocational Rehabilitation Department every day performing most of the 14 operations necessary to produce Drink-Aide™. Over the years, Bill has become an expert on its manufacture and has made many improvements in the process. "Drink-Aide™ is like a helping hand. That's the best way to describe the product," says Bill. "It helps people. That's good." Like all members of the Drink-Aide™ team, Bill takes pride in the product he produces.

Others working on the Drink-Aide™:

Program Coordinator Jennifer Holtzworth, Lynn DeVore who does the customer service and accounts and webmaster Eliot Spindel.
